First Confirmed Case of West Nile Virus in Horses for 2008 06/24/08
The first positive equine case of West Nile Virus (WNV) in California in 2008 has been reported in Riverside County. The affected horse, a 15-year-old quarter horse gelding, died of WNV disease complications.

SACRAMENTO - Dr. Mark Horton, director of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), today announced that a Tulare County woman has tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV) infection, the first reported human case in California this year. She was not hospitalized and is recovering.

National Activity
As of August 12, 2008, 168 human cases had been reported nationwide this year in the following 25 states: Alabama (1), Arizona (5), Arkansas (4), California (55), Colorado (14), Connecticut (1), Idaho (8), Iowa (1), Louisiana (2), Minnesota (9), Mississippi (17), Missouri (3), Nebraska (2), Nevada (2), North Dakota (8), Ohio (1), Oklahoma (5), Pennsylvania (1), South Dakota (11), Tennessee (3), Texas (10), Utah (2), West Virginia (1), Wisconsin (1) and Wyoming (1). Of the 168 individuals, 73 (43%) had neuroinvasive illness. Two fatalities have been reported in Arizona and Mississippi. At this time last year, 444 human cases had been reported nationwide.

There were 148 new WNV positive dead birds reported in California last week from the following counties: Butte (4), Colusa (1), Contra Costa (5), Fresno (1), Glenn (1), Kern (2), Los Angeles (24), Orange (46), Placer (1), Riverside (2), Sacramento (6), San Bernardino (17), San Diego (35), San Joaquin (2), and Tulare (1). 1,135 dead birds from 32 counties have tested positive for WNV in 2008.

There were 194 new WNV positive mosquito samples reported in California last week from the following counties: Fresno (1), Lake (1), Los Angeles (97), Orange (9), Placer (8), Riverside (10), Sacramento (18), San Bernardino (19), San Diego (2), San Joaquin (13), Stanislaus (11), Sutter (2), and Tulare (3). 906 mosquito samples from 23 counties have tested positive for WNV in 2008.

YTD: 63 Counties: 9
There were 13 new WNV positive sentinel chickens reported in California last week from the following counties: Butte (2), Los Angeles (5), Riverside (3), and Stanislaus (3). This is the first WNV positive sentinel chicken from Butte County this year. 63 sentinel chickens from 9 counties have tested positive for WNV in 2008.

There was 1 new WNV positive squirrel reported in California last week from Los Angeles County. This is the first WNV positive squirrel from Los Angeles County this year. 6 squirrels from 3 counties have tested positive for WNV in 2008.
